What happens to our digital avatars when we pass on? Might your loved ones order up a new copy of you when you’re past your prime? Would a computer-generated hologram of you be, well, you? These are some of the questions haunting Michael Almereyda’s 2017 film Marjorie Prime, which tells the story of Marjorie (Lois Smith) and Walter (John Hamm). He died 15 years earlier and she’s beginning to lose her memories, so her children purchase her a holographic Walter, with whom she soon grows close. Maybe too close. Marjorie Prime offers an intriguing take on a future of loving relations with virtual others.
